We have reviewed a few songs before Ex Ømerta’s “No Problem” and The Beaches’ “Fascination”. The next song that we are going to review is “Shake It Out” by Doll Skin. Doll Skin is a band from Phoenix, Arizona. They have been touring since 2013 and are a strong female punk band.
The song starts out with a mildly distorted vocal line, with a single strum of a distorted guitar. This is a good start to a song, as it draws the listener waiting for more. After a little bit the rhythm section of the band starts picking up. The bass line is a very fun line and it is well highlighted in the verse/ pre-chorus.
The chorus is a fun upbeat one that seems like it would be very easy to get a crowd going with. The lyrics, though simple in the chorus, are meaningful and are a push for perseverance. The verse that follows the first chorus is all about restarting and the push for continuing with life is still present. The thirds verse highlights the difficulties in life and how you should “shake it”.
The bridge of the song strips back a little bit and puts more emphasis on the vocals, but still maintains the powerfulness of the rest of the song. The song continues to be the upbeat, almost party song, till the outro. The solo that happens at the end of the song is a fun one that goes along with the vocal melody very nicely.
Though the song is written and performed by a punk band, it would have been nice if the vocals were a little cleaner or louder during the meaningful verses. There was a great message in the verses and they could have been highlighted more.
