The song that we wanted to review was written by a Canadian band from Nova Scotia. The band was formed in the late 90’s and they have made quite a catalogue for themselves. The song that we have chosen to take a look at today is “Poor Old Broken Hearted Me”. This song, released in 2005, has, on Spotify alone, has almost 1.5 million streams.
The song starts with amazing harmonies of an acapella hook, then the rest of the band kick in. The interesting riff in the verse that the guitar and bass play, do a good job of pulling in the listener. The transition from the verse to the chorus is seamless and it is a good build from the verse to the fuller chorus. The chorus would be an awesome one to get the crowd at a concert involved in. It is easy and is really catchy! The second verse contains the same riff as the last but is accompanied with more cowbell from the drums, this time. The next chorus has a good transition from it to the bridge that follows it. The bridge shows the bands excellent ability to sing harmonies. An amazing solo follows the chorus! It’s skillfully done with lots of amazing riff placed throughout it. The solo also does a good job of transitioning into the next part of the song. The break where there is no backing to the vocals does a great job showing casing the lyrics of the chorus. The emotionally filled outro (that is just the chorus repeated) does a good job closing out the song.
To summarize, “Poor Old Broken Hearted Me” by The Trews, is a great song that does an excellent job giving the listener more and keeping them totally engaged. This is an excellent song for concerts and radio.
