On our path of reviewing new songs, we have so far looked at Ex Ømerta’s “No Problem”, The Beaches’ “Fascination”, and “Shake It Out” by Doll Skin. We have been trying to focus on either a Canadian band (as we are based in Canada) or bands that feature a strong female presence. Both Ex Ømerta and The Beaches are from Canada and Doll Skin is an all-female punk band! To keep in those two areas, we have decided to review “Don’t Tell Me How to Live” by Monster Truck. Our CEO, Mackenzie Burnside, has also had the opportunity to see Monster Truck live, and has really enjoyed their stage presence.
The song starts out with a nice distorted guitar that has a very driving feel. When the rest of the band kicks in, the guitar is still playing the riff that it was in the intro, and it is still very present in the sound. The vocals are well heard over the rest of the band too, they aren’t overpowered. The pre-chorus has a nice breakdown to contrast the chorus well. The message of the chorus is great one, showing bravery and independence.
The second verse still holds the driving riff of the intro and first verse. The vocals in this second chorus are very powerful and help keep the listener entertained. There is some slight soloing during the second chorus, that doesn’t take awake from the message of it. Immediately after the second chorus there is a true solo. It helps build the song and sounds like it would be really fun to play! This solo doesn’t seem like it was just thrown in to take up time, this was a very purposeful solo as it flows wonderfully into the final chorus.
The outro is a very powerful and endearing part of the song. It has hits of all other parts of the song. It has a riff like the rest of the verses but has similar licks to what are played right before the solo. It all ends with a nice decrescendo and final hard note.
