Song Reviews: “4am” by Our Lady Peace

The song that we wanted to review today was written by Our Lady Peace. They are a Canadian alternative rock band that was started in 1992 in Toronto. “4am” was from their album Clumsy that was released in 1997 through the label Columbia. This song had reached the top 10 in the Canadian charts and likely helped the album sell 2.5 million copies worldwide (Canadian Encyclopedia, https://bit.ly/2QGa5TU ).

The song starts with a very emotional vibe to it. The slightly distorted guitar and clean vocals really push this feeling. The transition between the intro and first verse with the rest of the band joining is a good build to the song. The chorus of the song does a good job a showcasing the lyrics of the song, making them stand out. The vocals in the chorus are also accompanied with a higher harmony. The swell in volume and aggression of the song push the emotional feeling of the song even further with a slightly solo. The bridge is also really good at pushing the vibe of the song with more emotion put into the vocals. The emotion and aggression of the song maintains that this level for the rest of the song except the very ending; the vocals are left to say the last line of lyrics. Breaking the rest of the band like that almost leaves the listener on the edge of their seat to see what is going to happen next and having the acapella line at the end closes the song nicely.

To summarize, the band has done a great job of putting so much raw emotion into the song and it is clearly seen throughout it. Let us know what you think of the song on our Instagram and Facebook! You can take a listen below.
