We wanted to compare the covers of songs to the original. We wanted to highlight the differences and how they relate to the band that did it. The first song that we have decided to take a look at is “Blue on Black” which was originally done by Kenny Wayne Shepherd, but recently has been covered by Five Finger Death Punch.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s version of “Blue on Black” is, in our opinion, more bluesy than the Five Finger Death Punch version. It could be considered a rock ballad. He recorded this song in the late 90s and it is very reminiscent of its era. The solo that takes place in his version of the song has a slightly distorted but also crisp guitar that has the classic fender tone, that the guitarist is playing in the video.
Five Finger Death Punch’s version contrasts the original version of the song lots, but that is due to their heavy nature. The vocalist in this band is a very powerful one, and his vocal capabilities are highlighted in this cover. The heavy guitar becomes present in the chorus of the song, which strays from the original, but stays true to the band’s roots. The solo section of their cover is much more like their style; the heavy guitars, and drums. It is a nice take on the original song and could be a better listen for people who appreciate the heavier music, but also for new audiences.
In conclusion, Five Finger Death Punch used a very well written blues-ier rock ballad of the 90s, into a more modern listen for hard rock fans. What do you think? Did Five Finger Death Punch do “Blue on Black” justice? Leave a comment on our Instagram!
