The song that we are talking about today is “The Sounds of Silence”. This song was originally done by the band Simon and Garfunkel and was part of their album “Sounds of Silence” in 1966 (Discogs, https://bit.ly/3bvbftX). In 2015 the band Disturbed covered the song on their album Immortalized (Discogs, https://bit.ly/3eL1GJa). The decades that spanned between the two recordings of the song has allowed for there to be many advancements in the way that songs are recorded and produced.
Simon and Garfunkel’s version of the song starts with a light, clean guitar that is then accompanied by the harmonies of their voices. The feelings that felt in their version of the song are slightly more upbeat (which is likely due to the light guitar), but the lyrics are darker and deeper than the feeling of the song leads off. This is an iconic song that has been in many movies and tv shows since its release in the 60s.
Disturbed has done an excellent job at covering this classic and making it their own. Instead of guitar, the song opens with piano instead. There are no immediate harmonies to this version, unlike the original. The singer of Disturbed, David Draiman, has an amazing voice and range, which is showcased in this cover. It was very different for Disturbed to do a “ballad”, but they had done a great job at it. They’re a heavy metal band, so for them to be doing this, it was a quite different to hear from the. The feeling that Simon and Garfunkel’s version had is still felt and emphasised in this version.
In conclusion, Disturbed had done an excellent job of recreating the emotions that were in the original version of the song. The differences in the two version are distinct but both very recognizable. What do you think about the two songs? Let us know on our Instagram or Facebook!
