Original vs. Cover: “Nothing Else Matters”

The last Original vs. Cover that we had taken a look at was “Live and Let Die” and this time we wanted to look at “Nothing Else Matters” which was originally written by Metallica and it’s from their self-titled album in 1991. Gobsmack had covered the song on their 2012 album titled Live and Inspired. The 21-year gap between the two songs allows for there to be lots of other influences on Gobsmack’s take on the song. There are many contrasts between these two versions of the same song.

Metallica has the clean crisp intro on guitar that resurfaces in other places in the song. The intricate guitar work is seen through the whole song, and it something should be praised through the song; that stuff isn’t easy! On many guitar tab sites, this song is considered an intermediate/ difficult finger-picking song to learn. The emotion that can be felt throughout the song is felt through both the instrumental, but also the vocals. The guitar has very impressive melodies and if they weren’t there, the song would not have the same effects that it does to the listener now.

Gobsmack’s take on the song is entirely piano, there are no guitars present unlike the original. It is a great cover of the song that also has lots of emotion and could be considered just as impactful as the original. They still manage to get the raw emotions that Metallica had put into it even though it’s just the piano and vocals that are present. It is also impressive that they had managed to get the guitar licks on the piano.

The most significant difference that was pointed out is the difference in instruments; Metallica’s full band version verses the cover that Gobsmack did that is just piano and vocals. The level of emotion is still felt no matter which version of the song you are listening to, which with the difference instruments, is something that is really good.

What do you think about the two versions? Did Gobsmack do a good job of covering one of Metallica’s most well-known songs? Leave a comment on our Instagram or Facebook with your opinion!
