What to do if You Don’t Want to Practice

It is very likely that any musician has been here at some point; not wanting to practice, learn or create. Given the current situation with the Corona Virus, many are taking the time to do all of that, but some are finding it harder to do the things that they loved. This is okay. If you’re trying to get back to doing that stuff, but can’t find the motivation, we have created a short list of things to try.

The first suggestion that we have is try an easy song that you have memorized. By playing an easier song you won’t have to work as hard to play it. With it being memorized too, you won’t have to find the sheet music or struggle to play it.

The next thing you can try, if the above suggestion was successful, is try scales. For example, on guitar the basic pentatonic scales aren’t difficult, and the shape is the same. Doing scales would allow you to warm up to the idea of playing single notes that are more organized. It’s also always good to practice them!

Another tip that might motivate you to practice is playing your favourite song. This is likely a song that you love to play, and it is likely also fun to play. Playing your favourite song potentially means that it is a harder song to play too.

If these suggestions don’t help you find the motivation or help you ease back into playing, it’s okay. The social distancing orders that many places have, are a difficult time for many. Don’t hesitate to reach out to people via text or call. If you have any suggestions, feel free to comment on our Facebook or Instagram!
